About GNU/Linux in Layman Terms

Linux had a long history of making an impression of being a “nerd’s” Operating System. People had thought they’d need spectacular hacking skills to use it, and Linux did everything in its power to keep up such appearances. Even though these times are long gone, and Linux is quite well adapted for desktop use for real people to do boring daily tasks (and to an extent, even gaming) on it, some might still shudder at the notion of the penguin-shaped logo and the whole command line business. But what is Linux, anyway?
